I was intrigued by the idea of non-state groups generating legitimate legal meaning, especially the Amish, and how that effect can be extrapolated in Covers, Nomos and Narrative. Different communities use different constitutional principles in an effort to carve out room from state control, with the Amish utilizing religious liberties. They are an insular community, meaning they are seeking out autonomy, not radical societal change. This brings up the question of how far this self-segmentation in society could go. There is an emphasis on the idea that “a person cannot take up the Amish religion and practice it individually.” Considering the general unrest the majority of the population has with the current Government, this reading makes me consider if it is a possibility for people to come together and create their own insular community, separating themselves from government and society as the Amish have.
